Wow... Just wow.... This guy is a man among men. Just saw his HS football game tonight and Burton WILL be a stud at the next level. I guess most recruiting gurus already know this, but now that I've seen him first hand, I'm extremely confident in our future qb. I predict that he will see a package of plays next year to compliment Brantley not unlike the Leak/Tebow combo a few years ago. And what's more is I see Burton being every bit as impressive as Superman. Burton might be Tebow II, or better yet, Burton I.... (yes, I'm gushing...)
I'm no recruiting expert by any means. But I don't live too far away so I thought I'd go and check him out. To be perfectly honest - it looks to me like Venice runs the exact same offense as does Florida - dive plays, shot gun formations, empty backfields, qb draws. Burton broke many tackles that had the crowd in total disbelief (including myself). He lowered his shoulder and bulldozed the defense several times. He even completely hurdled a defender runnig down the sideline at the end of a 20-25 yard scamper and made it look effortless. He looked off defenders and then threw quite a few downfield passes. And had to scramble a few times and either found a downfield receiver or took off for a big gain. He was truly a man among men on the field tonight and am quite certain he will have 100+ rushing and 200+ passing. And to answer your question, the opposition was ranked #3 in the State in 5A competition and was undefeated.... Again - I do not watch tape of recruits, and don't even really follow it that closely - but this guy Burton is gonna be a star the way I see it... I'm curious to see what others say about his performance tonight and if anyone else who also saw the game thinks I'm exagerrating... Anyone?? Anyone?? Bueller??
I was there as well, I left at half time. (I sat close to **** Vital, although I didn't know until I left.)
I watched him play at Southeast a few weeks back and wasn't that impressed. I must have been game planning on behalf of Venice's coaches.
He was simply amazing tonight. His athleticism is sublime - he destroyed several defenders and sprinted away from the rest. He had several nice passes. His legs are as thick as telephone poles! What an athlete!!
I particularly liked the trick play that they ran at the end of the second quarter where the receiver acted like he was running off of the field only to have Burton send a bullet right between the numbers - that ball traveled about 30 yards in the air and probably never exceeded 7 feet!! He has a gun for an arm - why this kid is a three star athlete is beyond all comprehension.
Venice was playing undefeated and ranked 5A state power Manatee. When I left it was Trey Burton 28, Manatee 13 - it was all Burton.
And if we haven't already, we need to offer Manatee's number 7 - that get has a serious set of jets, I wonder what his 40 time is.
Thanks, Newcastle. Now I know it wasn't just me. And right after the play that you mentioned, he dropped back, had to elude pressure and rolled to his right and hit a receiver sprinting across the back of the endzone (about a 25-30 yard pass) in stride before the defenders even knew it was in the air... It was incredible.. And I agree about Manatee's #7.....
It most certainly wasn't just you - everyone that I was sitting around was in total and complete awe of this kid.
And the best, or at least most ESPN-worthy, play that I watched was where he faked left and the sprinted right, gaining about 35 yards and then, while in stride, leaping over a defender to continue the run. The crowd was buzzing after that one.
The kid is a stud!
I will never doubt Meyer again when it comes to recruiting - EVER!
'They' have him rated higher than Burton! Absolutely nuts, there is no way that kid could even hold Burton's jock strap. If that kid is a four star, then Burton is easily a five star - easily.
The following is a quote from Joe Kinnan, Manatee's four time state championship football coach:
“He’s the best we’ve ever gone against,” said coach Joe Kinnan, whose Canes are 0-3 against Burton. “Anybody that doubts he can play quarterback in college — he can play quarterback in college. He can do what (Florida quarterback Tim) Tebow does.”
Burton will probably be a 4 star when it is all over with. We will see what happens after Johnny Brantley graduates. As of right now Brantley is probably the SEC's 2nd best QB. Looking around the league i do not see too many QB's that stacks up against Brantley right now.
Snead was supposed to be the next great SEC QB. Right now it is hard for him to find his butt with both hands and Ole Miss is looking poorly.
Honestly, nothing special - he didn't stand out in any way to me.
The only players that were clearly better were Burton and Blakely. I am still in awe of his performance several days later - it was truly breathtaking!
Blakely was magic in the open field - he is blindingly fast although I don't think he was very tall. Anyway, if he has grades he will play division one.
My brother lives has a son at Manatee High and went to this game with Venice. He called me last night to talk about what he saw in Burton. Impressed with the way he ran and took control of the game and says he has that "take the team on his back" quality that Tebow has. Said his throwing motion is awkward and mechanics need work.
My wife (a VHS grad) and I are heading down for the weekend and plan on going to the game. I've heard from others about Burton's play against a good Manatee team and I'm looking forward to seeing him up close.

I didn't see ANY throwing motion issues with this kid. I sat on the Venice side, he was no more than 20 yards away from when he was keeping his arm warm throwing the ball back and forth - his motion is a lot better than Tebow's.
This kid has a strong arm and was throwing spirals all over the field.
Having seen that performance with my own eyes, I have every confidence in the world that this kid will be a great college quarterback. And besides, Meyer sees something in him which is enough for me and should be for any Gator fans.
Further, Manatee coach Joe Kinnan knows a thing or two about football and what it takes to play at the next level - he coached Tommy Frazier and Peter Warrick.
