Murphy with a great catch and finish in transition on a long pass from Boynton...Murphy has a great set of mitts and great finishing ability. He will be a star at UF. Better than Bonner at this point in his carreer

The new pieces are fitting nicely. As expected, big improvement in the post. Rebounding still needs some work but great team effort for opening night.

Thanks for the updates Osiris.

Osiris thanks for doing all the updates. Even though I came in late it was great to see the play by play.

Question: Did you think we looked that good or is St. Leo's that bad? Always hard to judge the preseason.

Thanks for updating!

i didn't watch it, only listened to it but our perimeter shooting outside of Boynton and Walker was not good at all (1 for 7). it would have been 0 for 6 if Tishman didn't score his only bucket of the game with a little over a second left. We will need Tishman, Shipman, Werner and Parsons to hit their shots when they get good looks. Hopefully we'll get Allen back at some point this season.

we can't allow so many offensive rebounds either. as i didn't watch it i'm not sure if we concentrated more on perimeter defense (allowed only 1 of 21 from behind the arc) which opened up the inside for them to get 21 offensive rebounds. opponents getting hot from behind the arc killed us last season so the perimeter defense is encouraging but second chance points hurt us a lot too.

i was pleased with the team's freethrow shooting as we finished 77.3%. we were in the high 80%s most of the game until our frontcourt brought us down a bit. we'll know more when we actually get into a close game that comes down to foul shots at the end.

By the way, the new Gatorzone redesign looks great!

So do you expect to learn less playing tonights over matched opponent than playing an over matched Stetson team late? I don't.

Didn't say, imply, or think that. The first regular season game that counts (towards our record) is Nov 14.

That's not really a big surprise. Outside of Walker and Boynton, we don't have a big 3 point attack, but those 2 create a deadly enough attack. Shipman never was and never will be a 3 point shooter - he's a slasher. Parsons can hit the 3, but I like what he was doing tonight a lot more than when he was firing up the 3 the last 2 seasons. Tishman just needs to gain some confidence, but he has the stroke.

Don't hold your breath for Allen. He is done, and he wouldn't get many minutes with the horses we've got out there right now anyway.

Donovan will get that ironed out. We had our hands on many of those, but when you consider that they were 1/21 from 3 point land, then you have to realize that there are going to be a lot of LONG rebounds. Our frontcourt players were boxing out, but the boards were bouncing way back over their heads to the boxed out players. They were not getting a lot of clean up points off the glass though. What I'm saying is, the stat was a bit deceiving.

Many of our guys are automatic - Captain Calathes was a poor FT shooter and because he necessarily had to have the ball at the end of games, he was the one who was at the line quite often. This season, we'll have 2 clutch FT shooters with the ball in their hands at the end (Boynton and Walker).

Overall, good game to shake the rust out and play with some intensity for 40 minutes. The team looks good.

i wasn't surprised by the perimeter shooting outside of Boynton and Walker either but we've still got to get better there. all i want is when ball movement finds them open on the perimeter that they knock down the open shot. though it's still very early they haven't shown the ability to do that and Werner and Parsons have a history of missing those shots.

i've got no concerns about Walker but only time will tell if Boynton's a clutch freethrow guy. If I'm not mistaken his FT% in high school dipped into the 60's. it was just one game but i remember reading an article where Boynton's team lost because he missed them in the clutch. 3 for 3 is a good start though.

but yeah not a bad way to start it. definitely better than the way Kentucky did in their exhibition. TOs galore and not much falling from the perimeter.

Ok, I was able to “watch” the game cast during the exam I was giving with one eye on the class of course. I wish I knew if UF played any man D. Here is what I thought player by player based on their stat line:

Starters:

Walker: 29 min, 16 pts, 9 asts, 0 to, 2 rbs. Wow! I have been critical of him, but wow. He really played PG tonight it sounds like. The assists are great. He was third in shots and I think most of those were second half shots after he took one shot during the first 18 min of the first half. He was 5 of 9 shooting and a very nice 2-4 from the arc and 4-4 from the line. His line 0 steals and 0 to makes it sound like he played very much in control and did not take risks. I could not have asked for more.

Boyton: 26 min, 22 pts, 6 rbs, 2 asts, 1 to, 3 stls. A very very nice start to his career. He shot well from the arc 5 of 9 as advertised. He shot 50% 7-14 from the field and 3-3 from the line. His steals and rebounds show that great basketball IQ I saw in him in all star games.

Werner: 18 min, 6 pts, 3 rbs, 2 to, 1 ast, 1 stl. An ok stat line for him. He played his minutes, was 50% from the field, 2 of 4, he made his FTs, but was 0-2 from the arc and had two TOs. I would like to see the turnovers come down but this is the contribution we can get from him.

Tyus: 24 min, 10 pts, 9 rbs, 1 ast, 3 to, 1 stl, 1 blk. Nice solid Tyus performance. He was 5-11 from the field. The rebounds were great and shows what he can do with some help down low. Unfortunately the 3 to is a draw back. Of course they finally have someone to pass to so maybe this is just rust.

Macklin: 23 min, 7 pts, 4 rbs, 1 to, 0 stls, asts, blks. He was 3-3 from the field. He was 1 of 2 from the line. He only had one turnover. But he got to 4 rbs by picking up a couple very late in the game. Where was the glass eater we were told he would be?

Subs:

Parson: 20 min, 6 pts, 7 rbs, 3 asts, 3 to, 1 stl, 1 blk, An decent stat line for Parson. Nice to see those rbs and a nice number of asts. Put together with Werner we got 12 pts, 10 rbs, 4 asts, 2 stls and 1 blk from the 3. That is a solid contribution from the 3, but 5 TOs needs to get better.

Shipman: 18 min, 10 pts, 3 rbs, 3 asts, 1 to, 1 blk. Not a bad line at all. He shot ok at 3 for 7 from the field and 4 of 6 from the line. He did play a little 3 I believe but I did not attribute any of his line to the Parson/Werner total above. Hopefully he has made the progress he intended over the off season. This is a good start toward that.

Kadji: 14 min, 6 pts, 5 rebs, 3 TOs, 3 blks, 0 stls and asts. Not a bad line for 14 min but too many TOs. He got more rbs than Mackin in 9 less minutes. The blocks are another way to return to the Horford/Noah days, but they may be tougher to get against better competition. I was surprised he was the last guy off the bench and only got 14 min?

Murphy: 17 min, 9 pts, 6 rebs, 1 ast and to, 0 stls and blks. Wow. Sounds like he might be ready to play. He was 3 of 4 from the field and the line. He out rebounded both Macklin and Kadji in less min than either.

Tishman: 11 min, 3 pts, 0 TOs, rbs, asts, stls, blks. To me the key was 11 minutes with no turnovers. Not against great competition, but we were unsure of his prior competition. He missed his first 3 shots but I really like that they got him two late shots to get him one the board with one made three.

Re: Osiris and joyofsobe

I disagree with you guys on shooting from the arc. We had two guys hitting and that is fine. Everyone even Humphrey has bad nights from the arc. Parson took one, missed it, we had other guys hitting, so he did not take another. That is a good strategy for a streak shooter like him. Tishman may have his games too.

I agree the long rebound issue when a team's offense is mostly 3s can explain some of this and maybe explain Macklin's lack of rebounds in this game? But it is something to continue to work on.

To me the free throw issue was Macklin and at 1 for 2 the sample size was not big enough.

Wow. Boyton had an impressive debut. He played like this was his second season. I can't remember a better first game for a freshman or someone meshing so well with the rest of the team from the start.

Boyton and Walker have chemistry. Those two are going to be a terror in the backcourt when they're both hitting their shot. Walker is going to get more open looks and looser coverage from all of the attention Boyton draws. Great combination.

My concern from the game is the frontcourt. We still have some work to do. Rebounding was poor in the first half against a smaller St. Leo team. This was a critical area last year. I expected a stronger showing in this game.

Overall, we seem to be in better shape this season than I expected. We have depth and more experience, especially with Macklin. The freshman look better than advertised. I'm looking forward to next Monday and seeing any lineup changes and adjustments.
