This from Meyer's transcript at the media days:

"We already met with a player, I don't want to release it yet, but we'll probably bump another good freshman player over from offense to defense and let him compete for one of those spots as well."

Anyone have a clue s to who this might be?

Speculation on Gator Country is that it's TJ Lawrence, who played WR and S in high school.

Sorry I was joking. Maybe I should have said DE instead of OLB to make it more obvious.

ESPN's full evaluation report on T.J. Lawrence:

quote:
Lawrence is not only an electrifying playmaker on offense, but has huge upside as a corner/safety hybrid and also return game value. He has excellent play speed, good size and is very versatile-- in fact we feel he may be a better fit on defense at safety or corner, but you cannot ignore his big play ability as an offensive weapon. On offense, he is used as a go-to, big play guy. He has great hands, runs sharp routes and is very reliable as a short-to-intermediate player but will surprise you with the occasional acrobatic catch, and he has a sneaky second gear to get over the top on deep routes. However, at safety, he really has a feel for the ball and is an excellent deep zone player. Reads keys well, gets off the hash quickly, is a good leaper, plays the ball and shows very impressive closing burst and speed that we don't always see on offense. He isn't a big hitter or tackler but is willing and adequate in run support. He has the hip smoothness and size to play on the perimeter and is strong enough to get in the WR's face and be a press guy at the line. The bottom line is that Lawrence has very good balls skills and a nice feel for the game. He makes plays and plays hard and most importantly, he is productive.

Might be an opportunity for him to grab some playing time he probably wouldn't have gotten on our extremely thin receiving corps. laugh When opportunity knocks...

I did not get a chance to see Lawrence play in high school so I can't give a bird's eye opinion. However if this evaluation is close to being spot on, then it sounds like a perfect fit for FS. Maybe not this year, but let's put them all at FS so we can finally move Wright to SS where he belongs!!

Nice video.

Did anyone else notice that in a couple of those long runs, it looked like he caught Chris Rainey? Or at least it was #3 from Lakeland.

I think he will be a great fit.

He's got great skills in reading the play and superb coverage skills (either in batting the ball down or intercepting it)-but most of the reports I've seen have questioned his tackling ability and said it was the one thing holding him back.

I agree that he's the most likely freshman candidate for the job and could fill in pretty nicely...but I'd say that Black and Hill are probably still above him in the rotation. Maybe in a year or so, he can seriously challenge for the position, but this year, he's there to provide depth and not much else. I highly doubt we'll see him in any meaningful action this year (if any at all). Major Wright and Black are both pretty good-and if Will Hill's anything like what has been advertised, then we have at least three players who can play at the level we need to. Thomas has a lot of the tools to be good-but things still haven't fully clicked (mainly because of injuries) and until it does, he's around to provide mostly depth as well. Holliday and Lawrence are around only to provide depth and athleticism at the position

The only other freshman players that I can think of would be Adrian Bushell or Paul Wilson, because he's a RS freshman. I think we have enough talent and bodies to fill the spots.
