When it comes to tipping, LeBron goes Scrooge McDuck

quote:
We are all witnesses. But not everything about the LeBron is worth witnessing. Sure, he has the $400,000 car, Jay-Z in his corner, and Phil Knight wrapped around his diamond pinkie ring. But witness how His Greatness treats the little people, and you may begin to see the virtue of Brendan Haywood's hard fouls.

One of LeBron's favorite places to dine is XO Prime Steaks on West Sixth. Its mix of swank drinks and delicately massaged beef allows the Chosen One to consume calories worthy of his royal digestive system. All of which is swell — except that LeBron is among Cleveland's stingiest tippers.

According to a Punch source, a peer recently quit after tiring of LeBron going Scrooge McDuck on his ass.

It went down like this: LeBron pulls up in his Mercedes outside XO. People stop and try not to stare, but c'mon, it's LeBron James. He enters the restaurant with a group of friends. On this special occasion, the King decides to dine late. He keeps his group there until around 3:45 a.m. During this time the waiter obsequiously pours drinks and fetches anything else His Greatness needs.

The final bill comes to $800. By the feudal laws of decorum, which stipulate that the affluent should administer a 20 percent gratuity, staffers figured they'd be pocketing an extra $160. But when they fetched the autographed bill after His Heinousness bolted back to Akron, their expectation turned to disbelief, then anger.

LeBron stiffed them with a meager $10 tip. This is what French nobles like to call your requisite Bourgeois *****-Slap. The waiter wouldn't even take it, tired of being shat on by guys like LeBron.

Still, at least the self-proclaimed King of Ohio didn't pull a Bernie Kosar — who gets sloshed at the bar and then has to remind the waiters of who he is before he stiffs them.

Maybe Jamar Hornsby was dining there that night and stole the tip before the server could get back to the table.

So he's a POS because of an anecdote that you only heard one side of?

Maybe Lebron realizes that tipping is optional - people forget that these days. Maybe the service was not worthy of anything more than 1%. Tough to say when the anecdote shared above is full of such clearly accurate and unbiased descriptions such as "King Lebron."

So, Lebron brings his boys to a steak house and stays until 3:45am, rack up an $800 tab, and only leave 10 bucks. And no, tipping isn't optional, it's how waiters/waitresses/bartenders make their money. They get paid very little otherwise. I'm sorry, but this is just a croc of sh**. Dude makes more money in a week than that waiter will in 5 years.

Tipping is optional.

You build wealth by being cheap, not by being extravagant.

If a waiter or waitress does not perform their task up to the expectations of the customer, then the customer's only recourse is to speak through his wallet.

While $10 seems ridiculously cheap on an $800 tab no matter the circumstances, I've had enough run ins with bad service that I can't fault LeBron without knowing both sides. There are some truly incompetent people in the service industry and if they don't like the tips, get an education.

And we are supposed to believe everything we read on the internet and from a waiter.

There is so much James probably does not know about being an adult with money which is what often gets young people who get money fast in trouble. Think about it:

1. he probably never worked in food service like many young people do.

2. he probably did not come from a family who were able to eat at sit down eateries often.

3. he probably had many meals paid for him before he started earning money.

So besides his possible lack of arithmetic skills, he started earnig money too fast to learn all the details of how to spend it. He will have to learn this lesson by being shamed like this.

Personally, I would deal with earning $100 million by my mid 20s and have to learn to tip by shame rather than learning about tipping by waiting tables. So it is not the worst thing in the world and easily correctable.

Yes tipping is optional, but $10? This is LeBron James, if the service was bad enough to only be worth $10, don't you think he would have complained and possibly asked for a new waiter? I don't know about you all, but when I get really bad service I don't want to stick around too long. If LeBron stayed until 3:45am like it says he did, I can't see the service being that bad.

Just a thought...it mentions that he autographed the check. Does anyone think he intended for that to be part of the tip?

EXACTLY!

And, the article said he drove up in a $ 400,000 car. No question though, he's definitely built his wealth by being "cheap."

Funny, just a few days ago people in Cleveland wouldn't dare to even utter so much as a bad word about their savior. All of a sudden he's down 0-2 in a series and shooting 19% they begin to write meaningless fluff pieces about his tipping habits to put him in a bad light.

Why does it matter how he tips? Does that affect his basketball abilities?

Maybe he feels so incredibly guilty about the horrible tipping, that he can't remember how to play ball.

I'm just throwing that out there...

A lot of restaurants will include an 18% gratuity to the bill, especially nice restaurants. It is possible that King Lebron thought it was already included and did not review the bill.

im gonna stay out of this for the most part befcause i cant handle the ignorance of those who have never waited tables yet have an opinion on this stuff.

first of all gratuity is on the food and drink not the tax so the server actually recieves less than %18. it is often insulting to the party to grat a check.

servers usually have to pay tipshare to the bussers and hostess which was 3% of TOTAL SALES for the night which means if you had a crappy night making 10% tips you recieve much less than that.

i have had tons of crappy service and agree that if you get bad service you get a bad tip but that is not the way it works with most poor tippers.

severs often make 2.83 an hour which includes while doing hours of sidework before and after shift.

i get bad service they get a 10% tip. or less on rare occaisions. bad service to me is bad attitude not slow service. i have worked with a lot of scumbags in that industry but a lot of good people too.

a bad tipper is a slap in the face. u will pay for the food but not the service.

mr punk: WHile we do not agree on much. I have to agree.....to take your idea further.....

In most restaurants you DO tip out other staff....so take that 3% tip share....that's $24.00 off the $800.00!!!!!!!!!

If he only got a $10 tip then it just cost him $14.00 to wait on that piece of sh!T!!!!!

I'm sure his manager did not make him tip out but that's pathetic.

What's said is it is the little people that buy your jersey's, watch the games on TV, etc...

Bron should be ashamed.
