Veteran Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews is hanging up his whistle after four decades of coaching and 26 years at Florida State.

The architect of some of the nation’s best defenses that helped the Seminoles to a pair of national titles in the 1990s, Andrews announced his plans to retire on Tuesday.

A football star at Alabama under the coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, Andrews developed 18 first round NFL draft picks during 26 seasons at Florida State beginning with cornerback Deion Sanders in 1988.

He's doing this now instead of at the end of the season to try and squeeze a little bit of effort from the defense, right? Let's send him out right mentality? Otherwise why not wait?

The USS Criminole is sinking fast. All the rats are jumping ship. Old Bobby Bowden is going down with it. I do not know if they are going to have a recruiting class next year. I believe that only kids who bled garnet and gold would want to attend fsu. Back to the glory days of Burt Reynolds playing 2nd string HB. Boy those were the days!

Maybe he is just trying to give Bobby a nudge of what he needs to be saying on Wednesday.

Mickey is smart enough to know what Bobby can't accept; the ride is over.

I finally have something in common with Fat Blobby: I, too, am hoping Andrews returns for another season-- because he sucks!

Having watched FSU play N.C., Ga Tech, and NC ST I would have thought that Mickey and the entire defense had already retired, maybe taking up fishing, because they sure can not play defense!

For the reporters' sake, Mickey should just issue a written statement. Otherwise the folks in the front row are going to be soaked from his slobber and spittle.

I'm probably going to be the Lone Ranger on this one, but I think Andrews has had a fine career. He's been the loyal sidekick to a legend there in Tally, won some championships and put a TON of players into the NFL.

Did his guys play dirty? Yeah, absolutely...but his schemes were brilliant. Think about it, throughout the 90's, FSU was about the only team that could shut down SOS on a consistent basis.

It is getting harder and harder for Andrews to get the players he needs...he's getting old, probably wants to spend a little time with the grand kids...

I wish him well in retirement...and yeah, he might be giving a little nudge to Bobby...

I met him numerous times when he coached at Florida and he seemed like a decent guy. He fit the 80's mold better than he does these modern times.

Looking at him now, it's hard to believe he was such a high-level two-way SEC player for the Bear.

I'll never forgive him for the 1996 game. There was absolutely no question that his orders were to take Danny out. He had the two best DE's in football, and playing to the echo of the whistle became a Semi tradition that day. It still amazes me how Danny kept getting up. It must have frustrated Andrews to no end.

Sorry, I always felt he was the guy who taught the players to focus on hurting players and playing dirty.

Can't respect that. He's getting the kharma he earned, I'm afraid.

That's okay, the gators grew up and moved on...and Meyer didn't tolerate Spikes behavior for a minute. Unlike booby and d dockett.
