Urban knew the consequences... so this doesn't upset me. Urban knew that the media was slanting things way to harshly. I am glad Slive has decided to stand by his rule.

Holy Smokes, Batman!

That is rather excessive. Particularly in light of the way he phrased his "criticism".

I wonder if Kiffy's wallet is big enough to support his mouth?

Holly Molly, that's a lot more than I expected considering his comments were mild. Effing Kiffin, it is actually his crap pissing off the league that led to this. I hate that ******. Luckily Urbs can afford it.

Ouch! Even with Urb's salary, that still has to bite. But Slive did what he had to do.

Yes, it has to bite... or its not punishment.

Honestly, I'm glad he got fined. Somewhat ironic that Meyer was the first person to be punished under the Kiffin Rule...

Urban may be writing the check, but I believe this is directed as a warning to Kiffen. A kind of shot across the bow.

I've never looked forward to a Sunday morning so bad in my life.

This whole week (which should've been one of the best this season) has been a complete joke.

30K for such a light comment is totally ridiculous, considering the week of "OMG/Outrage" criticism Meyer has had to hear. The fact that this rule was essentially put into place because of two or three coaches outright saying that the SEC officials were corrupt, only makes it this "offense" that much more laughable.

Does anyone know where this new rule can be found in writing? Are there different levels of criticism that net higher fines, or is $30,000 a blanket fine? Just curious...

I feel bad for Coach Meyer (30K has got to sting), but the SEC Commissioner probably didn't have much choice (although that fine does seem way over the top), knowing what he's got to deal with in LK. Kiffin is like the yapper dog that sets off the whole dog pound at night. All the big dogs are quiet and minding their own business, and then this little yapper starts up, and before you know it the whole compound is howling. This could also be more fuel (motivation) for the Gators. Also, maybe it's better to have all this controversy over officiating in the rear-view mirror by the time the SEC Championship Game is played.

The online bylaws had not been edited last I looked... and they were listed, "at the discretion of the Commissioner", so he can fine them whatever he decides is appropriate.

hmm If Urban would have been suspended for a half a game against Vandy, would he just suspend hisself for a whole game also?

And, if Kiffens gets a $30k fine next week, will he ask Monte for an advance on his allowance? scratch

I don't remember the last time I heard about a coach or athlete being fined that much. I'm kind of suprised. I guess it's better than a suspension. scratch

Mark Richt made the same comments to a reporter when asked about the play. How do we send Richt's comments to Silve?

Do you have an exact quote of what Richt said? All I've seen just said that Richt said it should have been a penalty. Meyer said a lot more than that.

The fine is ridiculous. I guess the conference and the coaches should start their own blogs to see what they should say or do from the opinions of the masses. Obviously that is what is occuring now...the fans and talking heads have now determined penalties and what can or cannot be said.

Have you seen how much they pay sports writers these days? Don't think Dooley could afford it.

But I agree with the point of the post. Writers have been baiting athletes/coaches for as long as there has been a "media."

Slive thinks by handing out a big fine that he will stop the public criticisms...but he won't. The minute there is a bad call that decides the game or Kiffin loses another game and opens his mouth, there will be an even bigger fine of $50,000.

Personally, I think these leagues who fine coaches/players for criticism of the officials are ridiculous. I thought we lived in America where free speech helps to make the entire system better. Apparently, the SEC/NFL/NBA don't believe in all that free speech stuff.

If each ticket holder entering the gate ponied up 50 cents, the &45,000 would pay the fine and add $15,000 to the athletic coffers....

I don’t care what anybody says 30,000 is quite a punishment to pay for just a complaint. Thanks to Kitten and his big mouth our head coach has to pay. Since Kitten arrived things in the SEC have went south. I hope UT losses every game.
