It would have been nice if the party in charge would address the current economic situation before discussion of significant additional expenses such as the $1.2T health care "reform" and cap and trade.

“It’s the 22nd straight month the U.S. economy has shed jobs, the longest on records dating back 70 years."
Welcome back Carter. Thank God for all those saved jobs. Sure |

Do the new unemployment figures include you Rob?If so then you're in the same boat as my son who is starting to get desperate.I know you've got other income but a lot of people don't.

Obama, you bad bad President. You make 10 months seem as long as 22 months. You have caused so much carnage and destruction. You should be ashamed of yourself. Resign and go write a book!!! If not, the noble men of this country should impeach him. How dare he make 10 months of carnage appear as 22 months? You and the other Nobel winner Carter have something in common. You know how to destroy a nice house the hardworking conservatives built!!! |

I'm included in the numbers, I'm sure. However, as you suggest, my situation is different. In hindsight, it looks like the "de-layering" may have been by design to keep the core from reforming with another community bank, in effect, dispersing officers over a period of time. There are contractual conditions which prohibit my resumption of employment until early next year. One final point. During my last 32+ years of continuous employment, I've never been away from my job for more than one week. I commented early on that it would be interesting to see how a teacher fills 3 or so months away from conventional employment during the summer. I've been out just over 6 weeks and can tell you it feels like a lifetime. Anyone who tells you they work for 9 months and are off for 3 is the same as most of the rest of us are not being truthful. I have 15 properties with many struggling (unemployed) tenants which now requires more of my time than normal. This time has allowed me to address vacancies, property improvements and adequate time for marketing, although with very weak results at the moment. As I suggested, the biggest problem is employment, not cap and trade or health care. I understand why PBHO/Pelousy/Reid have opted to go after this legislation now. The new group who will be elected next year wouldn't pass either in its current form. The net effect is damn the economy, full steam ahead with additional costly legislation. What line of work in you son in and where does he live? I've found indeed.com a good spot for job listings from several major job search engines. Good luck to you son, this isn't fun for anyone, including those who are able to take a little break away from decades of continuous employment. |

My son does IT computer tech work.He was let go from Advanta Credit union down in the Tampa area 2 years ago and after a year of finding nothing he moved to Dallas to live with his mother,He gets occasional temp jobs and he went on interviews to New Mexico and LA but came up empty. All his savings are gone and he's starting to get depressed. His car is 13 years old and it's paid for but he can't afford the $700 he will have to pay in January when he will be forced to get a Texas license and registration.Luckily he is still single and doesn't have a family to worry about like a lot of people but we're all praying the economy will turn around soon and these unemplyment figures have bottomed out. My daughter lives close by my son and she had her own mortgage broker business which went sour with the collapse of the real estate market and so many people getting foreclosed. She had some of her previous customers threatening her because of their loan situations which she had been a part of.So she closed her business and is just a soccer mom now.Her husband is a well paid electrical engineer but they were in crisis for a while too. Luckily I'm retired and my wife works at home but I can't really afford to help my son financially the way I'd like to.I figured with this stimulus going that it would take at least a year to get the economy going again but for those out of work and their unemployment benefits exhausted and the unemployment figures going up this is really a crisis situation. |

OP - I'm not joking here, but tell him to join the Armed Forces. If nothing else it buys him time and pays off debt if he has it. I joined out of high school not because I loved it, but because I needed the college fund and knew I wasn't ready for school yet. My point is this: there are options. He may not like them, but there are options and it is his choice. |

If they would take me, that is what I would do. Not sure they want a 42 year accountant. With that said, it's going to take years before the populace has any excess cash. We spent ourselves into this hole and will have to slowly climb out. Productivity numbers look good, but unfortunately, the 'capitalists' are not dispursing this to the workers. Here becomes the problem. Darn, that was painful. |

He's got bad hearing same as I do.Mine didn't show up till later in life but he has always been a little hearing impaired and it would prevent from passing a physical to get into the military. He did finally swallow his pride and will take jobs outside his career field but he says he won't work in a fast food place or for minimum wage because he's been maxing out his credit cards and needs something more than minimum wage.I don't think I could work at McDonald's either but I guess if it's your last resort you've gotta do what you gotta do. |

I'm with you and understand... I had a failed business due to a bad partner that put me into $150,000 of debt and it took 5 years to dig out of that and it would have been a LOT easier to declare bankruptcy, but we didn't. I know what you mean with pride... if it weren't for credit cards, a lot more people would be trying to sell apples on the corning like they were in the 30's... that's when we'll know it's REALLY bad and I'm still in the camp that says we could see those days again. |

Actual number is 17.5% unemployment. I do hope everyone who voted for change is happy.

Wait until inflation, healthcare spending and cap and trade hit...then you'll see just how bad this admin. policies are for our economy. I just cant believe that we have allowed this to happen.

I am sure I will regret asking this, but what exactly do you want Obama to do to "address" the economy. You certainly seemed to be opposed to Stimulus, or at least this "stimuless", and overall you take every chance to blame Obama for the current deficits, (90-95% of which have nothing to do with him) so you appear to be opposed to deficits too. I am not sure the money supply could be any looser at this point. What is left?

It really is 17.5% unemployment. It is not going to get any better in the industrial sector. Tere will be an up-tick in the seasonal workplace and that may offset the true production losses.
2010 is the really big year for the Dem led freebies from DC. If this economy does not turn around for the dems in the third quarter their goose is cooked in the elections. Not so maybe for the Senate but it could be a horrible night in the house. Not saying the dems would lose control but their automatic passage numbers will not be there. |

I think 17.5% includes "underemployment" - including part time work desiring full time and also people working in jobs less than their historic skills sets. This number has always been higher than quoted unemployment, is always thrown out by the party not in power to make the situation look worse.
