Unfreakingreal- If you are welfare, our government will borrow money for future taxpayers to have to pay back with interest so you can get a free phone and 70 minutes a month.
WTF is wrong with the people writing our laws? Link
Our government is seriously out of touch. Chit like this makes me want to get a torch, a pitchfork, and a bucket of tar and head to DC. ![]() |

You can take your free phone to the soup kitchen to take a picture of the First Lady serving meals.

Its non-stop comedy in DC. Cash for clunkers, appliance, Fido, golf carts and cell phones. Why does it not surprise me anymore?

I know, it is out of control, and I am not sure where it all ends. I was supportive of the concept of stimulus, but this is getting ridiculous.

OK, first off, a couple of facts to set the record straight. The Lifeline and Link Up programs were started in 2005 by REPUBLICANS!! So, take the Obama bigotry somewhere else....HE DID NOT DO IT, BUSH AND THE PUBS DID.
Second, nothing is free. This is 50% reduction in hook up fee, and at least $10.50 off of local phone charges (which are mostly taxes and fees anyway, so really the gov is not paying anything, just cutting fees).
Finally, the original intent to was land line phones for people's homes. While this is partnership with the states, and some states are allowing the money to be put toward mobile phones, the majority of federal dollars was meant for land lines. Now, none of the above makes this ok, and I understand SOME of the ire over programs like this in general. But, my GOD, the military pisses away more money than this in 1 week buying $500 hammers and $200 toilet seats! So, get the targets for your outrage correct, ie the REPUBLICANS. Then, come down off your high horses and decide if $10/month for poor people to have a phone is really worth you getting fired up over in the grand scheme of things. If it is, call the FCC and complain. For me, it seems like we have much bigger fish to fry in trying to curb spending in DC then whatever this pittance of a program is costing. Yup its amazing how many people come in my office and want to use "govt assistance" forms for identification and stuff, while they leave their kids out in the waiting room playing on their PSPs and listening to their Ipods, but momma cant talk to me cause shes too busy trying to turn her phone off or answering her phone talking about how Pattie Sue did this or that.

Great clarification NC. It is both repugs and democraps. Just think, if you raise $500K you too can participate in policy discussions at the white house! This is just another example of the problem with too much gov't. For me, this is the result of the slippery slope/hole in the dike many complain about but are countered with 'you lost the argument' argument. Darn, that was painful. |

I didn't see anyone singling out democrats in this thread. It seems to me that everyone agrees the government is out of control on wateful spending.
If all of this happened on Bush's watch what happened to change we can believe in? Not much more of the same. The money that the military pisses away is not being spent at the Soldier level. SGT Snuffy doesn't go out and buy the $500 hammer. Soldiers on deployments get pissed off when they see the money that is being wasted by contractors like KBR. They get paid outrageous sums of money for every plate of food they serve. They have civilians over there getting paid over $100,000 (mostly tax free) a year to sign out towels and basketballs in the gym. There are lots of big fish to fry in DC. Like that Cash for Clunkers fiasco that cost the tax payers $24,000 per vehicle. That was brilliant. I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade. |

Why are civilians handing out towels and basketballs for $100k? Are there no privates(E1,E2) anymore to pull those kind of details?There have been a lot of changes apparently since I served and not all for the better. |

NC: outrage over these programs does not mean that we (I) are not outraged about defense spending as well. I mean, the USA spends more on defense than ALL the other nations of the earth combined.
All of it is the nonsense that permeates the air and water of DC. Republicans and Democrats alike. No doubt. |

I should no better than to take the bait on these disinformation threads. So much of the political discourse these days isn't based upon anything close to a full set of facts.

I'm not sure I understand who is paying for these discounts? It may not be a free cell phone, but its still heavily discounted...is the government subsidizing it?

After reading through several propaganda based web sites and half a dozen other anti-Obama/ anti-poor/ anti-black web sites, I still do not know the answer to your question. I think, and this is only speculation from what few facts I could find, the government is waiving several of the fees/taxes normally placed on phone lines, while giving tax breaks to the phone carriers for each person that they give a 50% discount to during hook up. So, in the end I am not that it is any money changing hands from the government to the phone companies, just elimination of certain taxes and access fees on the poor and some tax breaks for the phone companies. |

The question should be why we are getting hammered with all those taxes in the first place. What is the criteria to meet the "poor" tax break and how is it being reviewed? Are they bringing in W2 or pay stubs? Is it too much to ask that people priortize their lives a little and budget for things as opposed to just waiting for the govt to make it possible to afford them.....temporarily! Isnt that what got us into the financial mess we are in now to some extent.

For me the knowledge knowing we have people handing out basketballs, towels and whatever is agin like SE Asia. When I first went in country it was about killing the MF's and nothing else. When I left 2.5 years later we had ice cream machines and stock piles of beer at Navy depots.
In short we lost the focus of killing the bums and focused more on creature comforts for rear area pouges and the like. Wars are supposed to be about destroying the enemy's will to fight and nothing else. We are going to go the same route as SE Asia and do the same stupid ass things we did there (political micro-managing). GOD know my heart I think this action we are following is going to end up witht the same results. Either win this damn war by whatever means we have or get the HELL out and quit wasting American blood on whatever the freakin polls tell you Mr. President. It is your show now and we can forget about Bush who could have finished this crap a long time ago. Finish it or get the hell out now!! |

We don't have the beer in Iraq (except for the Super Bowl) but they do have Baskin Robbins ice cream in all the KBR dining facilities.

Sar Major, I believe the guys deserve whatever small creature comforts that can be afforded. I believe that if we would let the Military do it's job without having to look over their shoulder to see if some politican is still smiling then we will lose this conflict!!
I gues I am just an old relic from the days when were taught to destroy the will of the enemy by all means availabe. I and others of my ilk taught our charges (PRUs/CIDG) personnel to kill first and worry about anything else afterwards. You do not win prizes for being nice guys in conflicts. You win the fear of your enemy for your actions when in combat. That is the greatest reward and allows you to overcome the enemy! |

Not really disagreeing, simply trying to find the facts and derail what was sure to be the next round of Anti-Obama rhetoric. Funny too, that guy has screwed up enough since taking office that you would think people would not need to make up reasons to be upset at him. |

President Obama could be the most popular guy in histroy right now by simply saying we won in the mid-east and pull all the troops out.
Just think of the billions of daollars he could save the American taxpayer al the while claiming victory. I am sure Europe and the rest of the world would just love America. I keep asking myself why this guy doesn't do that everyday. Must be something larger going on that I cannot see. |

I know we have had our disagreements in the past but I cant understand why the entire country (or at least those with at least a 10th grade education) arent up in arms about what this admin. is attempting to do. I knew the moment they passed the bailout what was coming and its here. If companies that make bad financial decisions or are just simply corrupt are allowed to sink or swim on their own merit....that fixes the problem. There are probably alot of people from this entire debacle that should have a cell right beside Maddoff that skated by...many in our own govt. At what point did it not become evident that hiring two people to run the economy from the govt perspective that used to work for B of A and goldman Sachs seem like a bad idea? Dont disagree with you Spur. But also agree with NC...its not just obama admin, its the bush admin, its republicans in congress, its democrats in congress...its state level politicians...all parties. We need a mini-revolution in this country- not overthrowing the government but overthrowing the current ruling class.
|
|||

Who is the current ruling class and how do we find them and overthrow them? I would assume you don't want to use handguns in your revolution.Will they be better armed than we are? |

Incumbents OP, Incumbents. And they have something better than guns, they've got the money. Next year, i'm voting against every single incumbent. I know that may sound silly but i've had it with these people. Just look how many have been in congress with more than 20 years experience. Dodd, Rangel, McConnell, Byrd, Frank...just off the top of my head and there are PLENTY more. Get them the heck out of there. |
|||
|

Heisman Gator |
I agree with you wholeheartedly Rick but I think the Vote the Rascals Out strategy has been tried before back in the 90's and the guy behind it just lost a lot of time and money for his efforts.Very few incumbents were voted out. What makes you think that even if we could replace everyone that human nature and political ideology being what it is that anything would be different? I've said before that term limits is the way to go but you know the present power structure won't let that happen. It takes more money than we will ever see to vote out an incumbent.Look at Bush who was inept at best but that didn't stop him from being reelected.And Obama who is getting more criticism every day will more than likely get reelected too as well as all the guys you mentioned.If they do get voted out they will be replaced by people who probably think the same. Until we get term limits and a constitutional balanced budget amendment I don't ever see any real change happening. |
