Link Twelve people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting spree at a Texas military base by what officials believe was possibly carried out by an Army officer.

The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

The gunman used two handguns, Cone said. He wasn't sure if the shooter reloaded the weapons during the attack.

The general called the attack "a terrible tragedy, stunning." He said the community was "absolutely devastated."

The extent of the injuries of victims "varies significantly," according to Cone.

President Obama called the Fort Hood shootings a "horrific outburst of violence."

"It if difficult enough to lose" soldiers overseas, but said it is "horrifying that they should lose their lives at an Army base in the U.S.," he said.

The president said "my prayers are with the wounded and the families of the fallen."

Cone said the motive for the attack, which took place just after 1:30 p.m. CT, is unclear.

Fort Hood, located just 60 miles north from Austin, is the largest U.S. military installation in the world, and has suffered the greatest number of casualities of all American bases in the war on Iraq.

Rumor has it he was a Muslim convert from Va.

You are the scorge of the earth. Nothing angers me like this kind of crap does.

He's a nut, as well as the other 2.

Some would say a gun nut. He apparently used a handgun!

Darn, that was painful.

Sadly, this seems to be indicative of the tone of the political discourse in this country.

A Muslim and or lib kills 12 soldiers!! Woohoo!! Great Day! Score one for team conservative!

You lose again its from the Gator Sports Forum Link Sorry my prayers go out to the soldiers and their families on this tragic day. You liberals refuse to blame anyone. The Muslim convert in Little Rock was not that long ago and now three killing 12 Soldiers is not a terror act on a US Miltary Base on US soil? Oh I am sorry Janet Napolitano dosn't use the term terrorism, it man made Disaster. She must have been looking for Christians and missed this one.

As usual, the press is stupid... it should have read "gunman dead, two people in custody."

They have both been released. Both were living people who were at the scene and rightly apprehended until things could be figured out.

What you are going to find is that this guy probably should have been discharged from the Army already, but through political correctness was not. All the indicators were there, but you can't discharge someone on indicators alone.

Let's see how it plays out.

How does an army psychiatrist (not battle trained/hardened), in the middle of an army base full of trained soldiers and weapons, get off enough shots out of a couple of handguns to do that much damage without somebody taking him out quicker? I don't get that.

Best wishes to the families of the victims, definitely not a time/place for politics.

Latest is that two were released and a third detained for questioning.

No one on an Army base carries loaded weapons other than MPs.

As for "how does this happen?" I always marvel at the monday morning quarterbacks who say "how could that happen" that a mass shooting like that on the Long Island Railway or the Luby's there in Killeen (where a friend of mine's mother was killed in 1991, we were LTs in the Army together 2 years after she was killed along with 20+ others).

I get tired of people talkig about "what they would have done." I mean picture the Luby's in Killeen in 1991... you are having lunch in a restaurant and a pick up truck COMES THROUGH THE WALL!!! Then, while you are sitting there slack jawed, a guy, who's been thinking about and planning this, get's out of the truck and starts shooting all the slack jawed people until 20+ of them are dead... elapsed time? Maybe 90-180 seconds tops including reloads.

The fact of the matter is that unless you look at every setting you are in as a potential site for this kind of attack and have thought about what you would do in advance, it is VERY easy to go into just about anywhere and do this.

I know that's not quite what you meant, but the "how does this happen" thing applies no more to Fort Hood than it does to VT or Luby's. Also, the building it happened in wasn't exactly filled with "battle hardened/trained CQB guys" either. Cowards pick their targets wisely... he wasn't looking for a shootout, he was looking to slaughter people and he did.

Let's just wait for this to play out... I can't wait to see how the obvious gets glossed over.

Also, I'm a bit miffed about DHS and FBI being called in by the White House and not being asked in by DOD. At least the FBI is smart enough politically to publicly say that DOD has the lead for now. The politics started early.

Good post detroit. Don't be too hard on the press, though; they usually report just what they're told.

I came to the forum hoping there wouldn't be any posts about this incident. It's just plain wrong to try and capitalize in any way, shape or form on personal tragedy.

Thanks Detroit.

I just got home. That was a hell of a day. The SRP site is down the street from my office. I ran by there during physical training this morning. Everyone that is deploying to Afghanistan or Iraq or redeploying from those locations goes through there. We get our immunizations checked, hearing, vision, dental, wills, life insurance, etc...

We have been on lock down most of the day. I had to have the first sergeants account for all 525 Soldiers in our battalion.

My son is stationed here and my wife works on the base and thankfully they were not involved in this madness.

The cousin of one of my Soldiers was killed in the shooting.

It took me an hour and a half to get out the gate when they gave the all clear. Unfortunately, I was on my motorcycle.

As for the questions about how this could happen on an Army base. Our weapons are all secured in arms rooms and we don't have ammunition on hand. Like Detroit said, only the MP's have loaded weapons.

I will always place the mission first.
I will never accept defeat.
I will never quit.
I will never leave a fallen comrade.

And scooby, it appears you may have linked to the wrong facebook page. You or the forum mods may want to remove that link.

Take care army. Glad you and your family are ok.

Just terrible event all around. I'm really upset the guy is still alive but at least, hopefully, we'll get the real motive. As opposed to all this speculation that passes for journalism these days.

Detroit, I watched a press conference with a Lt. General Cone (I assume he is in command down there) last night and the phrase he used when specifically asked about the FBI presence was that "they are here and 'we" have asked them to look into the background of the major".

I am sure there is a big chain of command and inter departmental boundaries between the military and civilian authorities that me not being a military person know nothing about, but honestly, does it matter as long as they figure out why this happened?

And the talking heads are having a field day. Too bad the asswhole did not have the decency to die after being shot four times.

Now we will hear nothing but apologist for Muslims in the service for the next six months.

Such a tragedy that could have been prevented.

I have to agree with Brian in terms of making the shooting a political thing. Trying to gain something out of a tragedy like this is despicable.

Listen, I am well on the record here as pretty much hating ALL organized religion, period. That said, it is clear what this massively cowardly act was about, and it wasn't Christianity, Judaism, Bhudism, Hinduism, Scientology or anything else you want to include... it was about Islam, period.

I find it interesting that the press is now idenifying the law enforcemnt officer as "female." Why? And why not "Muslim shooter" then?

As I said last night, it is going to become clear very quickly that this guy should have been discharged already and wasn't because of the obvious. That, unfortunately, it the price we pay for liberty and freedom in our country.
